One unfortunate side effect of pregnancy is nausea. This can happen with or without vomiting. It’s not a pleasant part of being pregnant.

Morning sickness strikes at anytime of the day or night and can begin just after one month of being pregnant.

The severity of nausea can vary upon women and the most severe form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is hyperemesis gravidarum, which is vomiting that is difficult to control within early pregnancy. This can lead to dehydration and ketonuria severe enough for hospital admission and intravenous fluid therapy. Kate Middleton had gone through hyperemesis gravidarum with her pregnancies.

Nausea may be caused due to a high in hormone levels, however nausea and vomiting do not have harmful effects on the pregnancy outcomes but can have severe effects on the woman’s quality of life.

Tips to try to relieve nausea:

  1. Eat slow
  2. Avoid having an empty stomach by eating by eating in small amounts in short intervals such as 1hour or 2.
  3. Foods low in fat can help to avoid nausea and may help relieve nausea
  4. Drink plenty of fluid
  5. Ginger is known to help relieve nausea
